Immigrants headed west used Independence Rock as a marker on their journey. The goal was to reach it by July 4 (hence it's name) in order to arrive at their destinations before the winter set in. Some made it. Some didn't. Nearby is Martin's Cove and the story of what happened if you started your journey too late in the season.
